The 2nd stay for us. we hit again on music night very entertaining. As the inn was not full our room was changed to one at the rear for a bit more peace and quiet at bedtime. the food was good and substantial.

This is our fourth stay at The Black Swan (which speaks for itself}. We had a very comfortable room, the food was superb, and as always Jackie and Steve could not have been more hospitable. One of our most favourite places to stay and we would certainly hope to stay again in 2024.

We loved it. Jack and Steve were very friendly and welcoming, as were their staff, great atmosphere, superb food, lovely room, couldn't have asked for more.

Our room was spacious, warm and extremely comfortable with everything we needed. Jacky and Steve could not be more friendly and welcoming, and there is a very nice bar and sitting area.Food is tasty and very well cooked but we struggled with the enormous quantities and the fact that all the dishes are very rich - one or two plainer dishes on the menu would have been welcome. Still highly recommend it though.

We've used the Black Swan for one night stopovers several times now. It's great - always a warm welcome, comfortable, good rooms, a decent pint, and good food. It's a quiet and peaceful setting and we've always had a good night's sleep. We like the way meals are pre-ordered on arrival - it makes mealtimes simpler and (for breakfast particularly) quicker. For a stopover we prefer the rooms with a shower rather than just a bath in the ensuite - worth requesting. We wouldn't mind if the quantities served at dinner time were reduced a bit - the food is excellent but perhaps a little copious! We will no doubt be back here in the future and we recommend the Black Swan highly.

We arrived at this fantastic old Inn, a place I last stayed at in the 1960's, when I was a serving member of the RAF.The inside had changed, with the passing of the years to include a much larger dining area but, theInn's fundamental character had not changed. Mine Hosts were of the top drawer and the sea bass, cooked in the chef's own sauce was the best bass I have ever eaten: and sea food is one of my favourite dishes. My wife had a pork dish which she also endorsed as of the highest quality. (The chef and his wife, also happen to be the owners). I cannot recommend strongly enough, to place this Inn on your list of places to stay and to enjoy fine dining.Rob James

We booked an overnight stop as we were travelling from The Highlands to Liverpool. We did not want to stop in a basic hotel and when we found this place it ticked all the boxes and it did not disappoint. The welcome from Jacky was lovely and the room was perfect. We settled in to the room and went down to the bar for a pre dinner drink and the atmosphere was very warm. We booked a dinner in the restaurant and it was absolutely delicious. The best mushroom stroganoff I've ever tasted. All food is cooked to order. The breakfast was also great value. We are highly likely to book again when we travel to Liverpool again. Thank you!

Stayed for the second time at The Black Swan, this time we brought our son and his wife. Wow! The food is awesome and the welcome very friendly. Would highly recommend! If eating evening meal at the hotel, choose an early start time or you won't be hungry enough for breakfast the next morning - which is a shame as the breakfasts are excellent! Looking forward to a return visit, when we've worked up an appetite!

Sunday Lunch and breakfast were delicious and filling. We enjoyed sitting in the sunshine in the beer garden with a few local ales.Thank you for making us so welcome. We would highly recommend The Black Swan & hope to revisit with other family members soon.

What a fabulous place to stay. We had a great stay at the Black Swan, the host was very friendly although she was busy, we settled in to our cosy room and then had the best dinner we have ever had, the food was perfect, innovative, fresh, perfectly cooked and tasted wonderful. After a good nights sleep, we had a perfectly cooked breakfast. We would highly recommend this inn and hope to come back, Well done for keeping the standard so high during such challenging times …

From start to finish they where very accommodating and friendly, chatty and seemed genuinely interested in chatting. The food was very nice, portion sizes are more than enough. Room had a very nice view over. One thing I would say is that if your over 6ft you might be ducking quite a bit but other than that was a fantastic stay.

We had had a very enjoyable lunch at The Black Swan many years ago and decided to make an overnight stop. We were not disappointed! The room was very comfortable, the hospitality very friendly and the food superb. The presentation of the menu did not do justice to the food which suggested 'pub grub'. Stephen is a great chef and the food is fine dining but with huge portions. The cooked breakfast was A1. We hope to stay again.

We got a warm welcome at the Black Swan. It is a pleasant country pub with seven rooms. The bar and restaurant are comfortable and well designed. The menu is traditional pub food but the quality is excellent. The bedroom was very comfortable, although slightly small for two. Next time we will book a king rather than a double.

We stayed here for one night with our little boy who is 2. We were welcomed straight away & taken to our lovely room which was a double with a separate single room down a few stairs. We had breakfast in the morning and were asked to make our choices the night before. This meant that as soon as we came down we had a table set and our breakfast was brought out for us. I thought this was an excellent idea & the food was superb. If we ever travel up to the Lakes again we would definitely stay here.

The bed was very comfortable and the rooms spotlessly clean with many extra little unexpected touches. The reception rooms are comfortable with plenty of seating and a wonderful fire. The food is good. Produce is locally sourced, beautifully cooked and piping hot. I have to add that the whole group loved all the vegetables, especially the cabbage and the mashed potatoes. Thanks again Jacky and Steve for a rather special weekend.

When one arrives, one could be forgiven for thinking it doesn't look like much. However, once inside your mind will be changed.Received and welcomed by the hostess Jacky and shown to my room. Very fiendly lady who makes her guests feel wanted. The dinner in the evening is very good - I had the half a chicken with bacon and Tarragon I believe it was. Absolutely delicious!!Breakfast was also prepared to order and piping hot and the bacon and sausage was super quality meat. The rooms were large, airy, bright and tastfully decorated and most importantly the bed was nice and comfortable and the bathroom was clean and bright with a bath and shower with a very good water pressure. The only draw back of this hotel is the wi-fi in the rooms. It's a bit hit and miss and in fact my colleague who joined me on this trip couldn't get wi-fi at all in room 1.Overall, a lovely trip and a nice place to stay and eat.

This lovely pub in a small village was a wonderful find, and we will definitely be visiting again! The couple in charge were so welcoming and friendly, and all the staff were helpful and efficient. We had an evening meal there, and the food was nothing short of awesome - beautifully cooked meals in good portions - and breakfast was great too. The rooms, in fact the whole place, were clean and tidy and well looked-after, and the bed was comfortable. The surroundings were delightful, rolling hills with the odd sheep dotted around here and there, with larger peaks looming in the background - perfect for a walk just before dinner! I cannot recommend the Black Swan more highly.

I will write my review in Dutch.

As weary travellers, we arrived when the bar wasn’t open, but were greeted with the warmest of welcomes none the less. We were quickly shown to our large, light, airy room and were given details about dinner reservations (if needed) and also breakfast details. We had travelled a long way and crashed out in our room, so didn’t make use of the dining in the evening unfortunately. The breakfast was excellent and cooked to order and served by our very friendly host, who chatted to us with real interest, it all felt very easy and genuine. The only gripe was that we had been given a very warm room, which had been adjusted for a previous elderly couple, but due to our tiredness we didn’t raise with the host the night before. We did however mention it in the morning and she was very apologetic. The issue could have been easily rectified if we had not been so tired and had said something the night before. No fault of the establishment at all.A great pleasure to stay and we would gladly stay again.

A warm welcome from Jackie, who was friendly and approachable. The location is very good, very peaceful with little traffic. The views are wonderful when going for an evening stroll. It was also convenient for my visit to Potfest. The breakfast and dinner were excellent, well cooked, with good produce and lovely vegetable accompaniments. I would certainly use The Black Swan Inn again.

We only dined in the evening once during our stay, and really enjoyed the experience. The menu was extensive and tempting enough to dine over several nights without the need to repeat our menu choices. We enjoyed our breakfast times, with efficient and friendly service. The accommodation was excellent very comfortable and we had everything we required. The breakfasts and evening meals were very good, all freshly cooked and had non meat options. All the staff were very helpful a great stay. We would highly recommend The Black Swan.

Steve and Jacky made us very welcolm in their clean and comfortable hotel in a delightful area, not full of tourists and some fantastic walks to the north east as visiting the lake district. The highlights of the day was the breakfasts and large evening dinners cooked by Steve and served by Jacky and the family. We highly recommend this hotel which we found excellent.

We have stayed before. As usual, it was welcoming , squeaky clean, quiet, and a very nice place to break a journey, and relax, draw breath. If we have one adverse comment, it would be that the food portions are a bit on the large side, at dinner. Two starters would suffice.

I cannot imagine our wonderful hosts could have done more for us while we stayed for five nights with them. Steve and Jackie are friendly and easy to talk with, yet still work hard to serve delicious food and ensure that everything is clean. The wifi (free) signal is good and the bar is well stocked, especially if you're looking to try local ales. Culgaith is ideally situated between the Lake District and the northern Pennines, which makes it ideal for walking. Both are easy to get to on the fast A66. The next time we take a break in this part of Cumbria, we will definitely return here.

The food in the restaurant was wonderful (we had the sea bass) and the breakfasts were excellent too. Staff were friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble for them. We enjoyed visiting the nearby house, gardens and watermill at Acorn Bank National Trust property too. Steam trains also pass through the village on the Settle to Carlisle railway line.

What a great pub and hotel to find - good location and very helpful and kind staff. Jackie couldn't help enough to accommodate our needs. Early departure on the Saturday meant a pack up for breakfast, which was excellent. Set us up for the tough day ahead! That evening the pub was set up for the Euro's and what a great atmosphere. We were a family of 6 staying and we were all made to feel very welcome - if you are visiting the Lake District and you want that extra attention then I can recommend the The Black Swan Inn - Thanks Jackie and Steve!! I discovered the Black Swan when I was travelling for my job, and stayed there a couple of times. I really liked it so when my wife & I decided to have a staycation around Cumbria/Lancs it was an opportunity to show her some of the places I've stayed at and really liked. The Black Swan is rural, not much around but you don't need much else. The building is beautiful and quirky. The rooms are not huge (the ones I have stayed in anyway) but certainly not too small. The only (tiny) issue for me is that the shower cubibles are pretty tight - but then again my wife says that's my fault because I am not small by any means - she is and had no problem so that's me put in my place. The bar area is lovely, but the real jewel in the crown is the food. The restaurant always seems pretty popular - and the menu is fabulous. Nearly as good as the food itself which is beautifully presented and generous in quantity. Absolutely lovely meals. The food element continues to breakfast, with perfect coffee & a brilliant Full English - and I have great experience in judging these ;-)Thanks again, glad you are back, glad to be back and will be again...Keith

Pros: Friendly staff. Warm and cosy pub. Pleasant dinner and plentiful breakfast. The bed was very comfortable with pristine white bed linen. Plenty of lovely fluffy towels. Good tea/coffee/biscuits and water hospitality tray. Lots of storage space for longer stays. Good shower with excellent hot water. Very Covid aware in these difficult times.Cons: decor doesn’t reflect the character of the lovely old building. Toilet seat could be replaced. Windows quite black at edges. Condensation seems to be an ongoing problem.Would have been nice to have been asked if we had enjoyed our stay. However the overnight stop was very good value. Lovely to sit in the bar having a drink after dinner. Would maybe try a larger room next time but perfectly comfortable in the one we had. Would recommend and definitely return.

Second visit within 3 months during COVID.We said we would return which we rarely go anywhere twice. Second time was equally COVID safe & great welcome. The landlady Jackie is lovely with a great sense of humour & the landlord is very helpful & is the chef cooking excellent food. The evening meal & breakfast were superb. We highly recommend it & will definitely return ????We also made the picturesque drive out to Barnard Castle this time without the need of a tow truck back ????

We were looking for somewhere to base ourselves for a Lakes holiday, our Greek holiday had to be shelved for this year. The Black Swan looked promising, a very informative web site. We booked for 3 nights. We were warmly welcomed in a lovely reception area and shown to our pleasant, comfortable ensuite room, very well designed and spotless. A good start. This was a lovely pub with dining room and lovely garden, great beer choices and wine list reasonably priced. The food was some of the best we have ever had in a pub, again reasonably priced, you will need a good appetite for all courses and the breakfasts were incredible, what a way to start the day! All this comes with such a genuine and lovely standard of service from everyone, Steve and Jackie the landlords know how to manage their business, especially in these troubling times, they were lovely people! We wish them and their locals well! We booked for an extra night, and will be back soon.Mike & Yvonne

From the moment my wife and I arrived in the late afternoon it was clear that our stay was going to be an enjoyable experience. Warmly greeted by Steve, the owner /chef, he went to very reassuring lengths to explain the stringent Covid-19 precautions that he had put in place, and these were in clear evidence all evening and the following morning at breakfast.Along with his wife, he employs a small team of friendly, polite and efficient young ladies serving drinks at the small bar, or food in the restaurant. Tables, chairs and surfaces were immediately sanitised after use, which made for a very relaxing evening. The Black Swan is a typical old cottage style building which has has been tastefully modernised to a very high standard, without losing any of its charm, as reflected in the retention of a cosy log burning fire in the pub area. The main restaurant however, is designed on slicker, brighter moremodern lines but cleverly maintains the building’s character with the inclusion of a very modern attractive wall mounted coal effect fire. Very well thought out and fits in perfectly. The ambience in the restaurant was definitely enhanced by the incredibly high standard of the quality, presentation and variety of food on offer, and within minutes of being seated, we could sense that all fellow diners were making very favourable comments on the cuisine, and before long, this hitherto band of strangers were happily (but socially distanced) chatting away across the tables on the merits of each dish as they tucked in!My wife had baked Camembert to start, whilst I enjoyed one of the best home made chicken liver pâtés I have ever tasted, (so good in fact, that I cajoled the chef into a portion to take home with me the following morning). Mains were beautifully presented sea bass fillets with a decadent creamy prawn sauce, whilst I enjoyed haggis stuffed chicken breast with an equally decadent whisky cream sauce, all accompanied by beautifully cooked fresh vegetables and delicious home made chips.I have to blame the other diners for convincing us both that we could manage a dessert each, despite us overeating on the first plates, but we succumbed to a creme brûlée and an individual lemon cheesecake both home made and equally delicious, to leave us greedily overstuffed!Room was spotlessly clean and comfortable, and the whole experience was of an incredibly high ?????????? standard. Our one night stay was rounded off with a generous fresh breakfast the following morning. This place is one of the best, go out of your way to visit, you will not be disappointed.

The food was excellent, but don't tell the chef. Its in a lovely quiet place, the rooms were clean and comfortable.A big thank you also to Bob, who works in the kitchen, but helped us squire 2 new tyres for our car, on a Sunday. We stayed here for 1 night on our way back south from a holiday in Scotland. We were met with a warm welcome. Our room was large and comfortable with 2 arm chairs. It had all the facilities we needed. We were disappointed that the en suite didn't have a shower, just a bath but that was our fault as we hadn't checked. The Inn is well maintained with seperate reception/lounge, restaurant and bar areas. The bar was a very pleasant place to relax with drink. We ate dinner in the restaurant and it was delicious with large portions. Breakfast was also good. All the staff we met were friendly and helpful. The Inn is set in a nice and quiet location not too far from the main route through the area, i.e. A66. It is about a 10 minute drive from Penrith town.We recommend this Inn.

I only wish I had booked for a couple of nights now as this is one of the best places I have stayed. It is clean, the staff are fantastic & the food is amazing. Hats off to the chef & the barman who made our stay all the more enjoyable. The only thing I could comment on was upon arrival we had been hoping for lunch but were told they don’t do lunches in the winter months. I can completely understand this due to quieter conditions but maybe lunch advertising should be omitted during this time eg room info & other road signs, internet etc. A small thing though & ended up enjoying a lovely lunch just a short distance away. Thank you for a lovely stay

Lovely pub, the food was marvelous. Huge Sunday roast and even bigger breakfast. The staff were great and helped get our boarding passes printer following a demand from RUINAIR that we had to provide them with paper boarding passes despite having downloaded then to the wallet in their app !The rooms are small but beautifully formed with everything you need. Great atmosphere in the pub with friendly people. Highly recommended.

This is a nice easy relaxed hotel with good food and very generous portions. The front of house staff are exceptionally welcoming and the rooms comfortable.Nothing is pretentious and even the locals in the crowded bar are the genuine article. Maybe the stairs for the geriatrics or the impaired walking might be a problem

We spent 2 nights at the Black Swan in a large bedroom with very good facilities and a high standard of decor in a light and bright room facing the fields at the rear of the Inn. The food both in the evening and for breakfast was of a very good standard in terms of quality and presentation. The bar area was well presented and drinks prices were very reasonable. Parking is available at the front of and rear of the Inn.

Steve, Jacky and Ben were wonderful hosts, always found time for a chat and a laugh. The Inn is superb in every way, cleanliness, service quality, local knowledge, etc. The food in particular justifies special mention, both breakfast and dinner, and all four meals we ate there were superb, showing imagination and skill, using high quality produce.Full marks and heartily recommended.Peter and Janet

When this angler, who lives in Cornwall, is prepared to join the Appleby Anglers Association, it says a lot about the quality of fishing still to be had on the River Eden.Oh but what a joy it is to arrive at the Black Swan knowing you will be made welcome and afforded every comfort during your stay and are able to fish four miles of the river at Culgaith for free. With very comfy beds and cosy bedrooms one can relax at the end of the day , take a drink in the bar or enjoy one of Steven’s satisfying dinners. His Breakfasts too set you up for the day ahead whether you are off fishing or having to set of home. With The Black Swan so well placed for the traveling angler wanting to find Salmon ‘up north’ or trout in Cumbria, this is my Home from Home stopover. I highly recommend it. Jackie, Steven and family will make you most welcome!

Went and spent the weekend in the Lake District with the wife and stayed at the black swan inn. Had a really good experience the staff were very welcoming and quite friendly. The food was really good the sausage and mash topped with a fried egg was so tasty and the malteasers cheesecake was mouthwatering. We stayed at this inn 3 years ago and then it had only just been renovated and decorated the smell of fresh paint then was overpowering, but now under different management the place was a really nice stay thanks guys.

I stayed for 3 nights on business earlier this week. The staff were very friendly as were the locals in the bar.The food is excellent and the rooms are clean, warm and comfortable.I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Black Swan, so much better than a faceless, large chain hotel.

We had a king room at the back lovely room spotlessly clean and plenty of space, the downside was the extractor fan from the kitchen is very noisy from 7.30am to about 9pm and is right beside the window. The head waiter was lovely and attentive a pleasure to meet. The food was good but could I say more choice of fruit & cereal at breakfast as only grapefruit/prunes.As there was no reception we did flounder a bit on arrival but the same young man was soon with us (could we suggest a bell and notice on the table in residence lounge by the dining room)which would have been helpful.Overall it was a pleasant stay in very nice surroundings. So sorry we didn't get the waiters name he was a credit to the hotel.

I can't rate the black swan highly enough, we didn't check in till about half past 11 at night, yet the staff that greeted us us on arrival were still very welcoming and even opened the bar again so we could get a drink before bed. The rooms are also of a very high standard and very clean. Just what I needed after a long hard days work. I highly recommend this place! 10/10

The Black Swan, near Penrith, is one of my top hotel finds of the year. Wonderful service, great night's sleep in a very well appointed bedroom, excellent food and an exceptional breakfast.I arrived late, but the owner went out of his way to prepare sandwiches for me and you couldn't ask for more - excellent. Will make this my "driving South from Scotland" stopover hotel - every time.

Had a lovely stay and beautiful meal , good price too. Only thing bad I have to say about it was we were directly above the freezer in the bar area , and it buzzed all night kept my other half awake as it was quiet loud , Would definitely stay here again and recommend it to other friends and family.

A big thank you to all the staff at the black swan for our warm welcome. When we arrived it was raining and we were both wet through, after a quick check of the booking they showed us to our room, a twin room, the place was amazing. Clean, fresh, warm and plenty of room for two bikers with all their riding gear and their luggage. Friendly staff and knowledgable about the local beers which helped for my friend as he was an ale drinker. Locals are friendly and listened to my friends stories, I'm surprised he didn't bore them stupid. Overall a great place to stay, wished the weather was a little better for us.

The rooms were well appointed, very clean and comfortable. We had a problem with noise from the freezer in the kitchen below our room but we were relocated immediately. We decided to eat in the Black Swan both evenings and were delighted with our decision. The food was delicious with plenty of choice for a good price. Breakfasts were equally good although one of the party was disappointed that kippers were on the menu but not available either day.We had a quick walk around the village of Culgaith and found it to be charming, somewhere we will definitely visit again, and we would have absolutelyno hesitation in booking accommodation in the Black Swan again.Thank you for making our stay so pleasant.

Our second visit and just as delightful as last time. If only you could control the weather on Cross Fell as well as you do the place. Our room was beautiful & the bed very comfortable. The beer was greart and the food delicious. The only down-side was the room was over the bar entrance where people gather to smoke and, inevitably, chat. They were quiet & restrained but it made it impossible to get to sleep before 11.30. Not much you can do about that as their behaviour wasn't unreasonable.

As soon as we arrived we were welcomed and made to feel at home. We stayed for two nights (30th and 31st December) and were just expecting to have a relaxing break! As well as this, without meaning to, we had booked for a fantastic meal on the night of New Year, and joined in the celebrations. It was a perfect stay. We couldn't have asked for more. Perfect location, excellent food, lovely property, amazing rooms and brilliant service! We will definitely be coming back and we have already recommended to friends and family! Thank you!

Everything was seamless and the rooms were really good, clean and the bathroom had plenty of towels and toiletries for your stay. The hotel itself has a lovely decor and feel to the place and you felt at home as it was so cosy. The pub had a dinning area and served us wonderful tasty food and had interesting specials such as filet steak. We did our booking through Booking.com which indicatedour room would be ready from 12.30 although we were told that was wrong when we got there about 12.50, normally 2.00. Despite this a very capable young man invited us to have a drink and whilst we waited he arranged for our room to be fully prepared.By 1.20,we were in our room which was great. A bit of a squeeze for two in the bathroom but the room was clean, bathroom was well equipped and the bed very comfortable. Although we did not eat there other than having a very good breakfast we got the impression that the food was of a good standard which was supported by our local friends. Thought the staff were very professional and well trained. Despite our room (No 2 being above the main bar)we were not disturbed other than the alarm being set at midnight presumably when the bar was closed. Plenty of parking at front and rear. Easy to find in the village.

We made this booking for a overnight stay on route back to Essex from Plockton West Scotland. What a nice location in a small quite village and a nice sunny day to finish the holiday on. Parked right outside the Inn very easily, staff were on hand and very attentive nothing was any trouble.Room was a King room with a nice view of the back garden and field beyond, room was large very well equipped and very clean.Local ale was served just right and made a refreshing afternoon experience in the garden.Dinner was fantastic we both enjoyed that and finished with the cheese slate and a malt whiskey for good measure. Relaxing evening and very enjoyable.Breakfast was very good and was enough to send us on our way.A very comfortable, enjoyable and memorable 1 night stay...next time hopefully it will be longer and will include the local fishing!!.Thanks to all at the Black Swan Inn

Accommodation first class. Clean well appointed rooms, staff very approachable and friendly.30 minutes from Keswick, 15 from Pooley Bridge, so most walks in the mid to northern part of the Lakes within easy reach.

A very nice hotel in a typically quiet Cumbrian village. We had a lovely en suite room newly decorated to a high standard & most comfortablyfurnished. The food was good & the staff friendly & considerate. We'll stay again.

We used the Black Swan as a stop-over on the way to Scotland to break up the 550 mile journey to Fort William from Portsmouth. We did the same on the return journey.Couldn't fault the Black Swan.A recent revamp ensured the accommodation was excellent (King Size Rooms). The food was superb (nice wine selection too) and the staff friendly, very polite and they take time to converse with you.Thoroughlyrecommended.Take time to walk down to the river if you go there.

Lovely wee inn Amazing food. Think our twin room No5 was a bit overpriced as very small but everything was immaculate

Our stay at Black Swan was lovely. I'd love to say perfect but there was a couple of minor things that easily could be resolved. The staff were warm and friendly especially Chris the young bar lad. what a lovely young man, his parents should be proud of him. The room was very clean and had everything you needed. Maybe bigger bath towels would be good though. My only niggle was at breakfast time. On the first morning I had to ask twice for a cup of tea as did the man on the next table also I had to ask for juice on both mornings as it was not refilled when empty. On the second morning we asked for toast and didn't get any, the couple on the next table gave us some of theirs. Music. A low tone of music needs to be playing on a morning as it was a little uncomfortable to speak to one another at breakfast as everyone can hear each others conversation, music would break the silence. Otherwise I would recommend staying at the Black Swan and I would deffinately stay again. Thankyou for a most lovely stay

We go to Scotland every year and like to stop en route. This is our first time at The Black Swan and will not be the last. Very clean, comfortable and fresh looking with an excellent restaurant. The food was well cooked, a good selection and plenty of it. All the staff are very friendly and good at their jobs. I would recommend this as a very good place to stay and very good value.

We came across the Black Swan by accident, just trawling the internet looking for somewhere nice to stay. The Black Swan is lovely, the man who checked us in even carried our bags for us. We were shown our room, which was lovely, everything we needed was available. The rooms are well appointed and extremely clean. The room was warm but we just turned the heating down. The lounge bar is fantastic, don't believe what you read on other review sites, the drinks aren't overly expensive and there are lots of drinks to choose from. The bar man was lovely, he chatted to us about local ales and how much he enjoys helping select the ones that are guesting. Even the locals chat to you, which is nice. We had dinner here, the food is fantastic, lovely friendly waitresses. We had three courses each. The prices are realistic and food is well presented and there's plenty to eat. Breakfast in the morning was help yourself to juice, coffee, cereal and fruit. There's a choice of cooked options, my husband had the grill (Full English) I had poached eggs on toast. then there's toast and marmalade or jam. Tea is available. The waitress brings you more toast or tea/coffee if you want it. Check out is easy and quick but you are not rushed out of the door. The staff are lovely here, nothing is too much trouble, even the chef laughed when I told him he'd spelt something wrong on the specials board and he didn't cry when I asked for well done lamb.I'd definitely recommend The Black Swan, it's a really nice place to stay and we will be back. Thanks to all concerned. xx

We had a fantastic time at the Black Swan.We met as a family for a birthday meal and were looked after brilliantly by Chris and the rest of the team throughout. The room was very nice and comfortable, great food, fab atmosphere and cosy.I need to emaphasise that the young chap (we think it was Chris), who gave us a very warm welcome and looked after us was a real credit to the Black Swan.Extremely polite and attentive.Breakfast was delicious, and again, the staff were brilliant. We have found our ideal meeting point between our family homes and will certainly return the Black Swan without hesitation.

If you could find a place that was very comfy in the bar, had a choice of real ales on tap, served freshly cooked fabulous food, and then also had bedrooms that were comfy, clean and big, you'd have something good.If it was set in a village in the midst of some of our most gorgeous countryside, then I think you'd agree that it was a near perfect find.Well, the Black Swan is set in the Eden Valley, which gives you a clue as to why you should go and see if you agree with my perfect find.

Stayed for 2 nights in Room 1. Nice size room and the twin beds converted into a King size, which is what we wanted. Only snag was there was no shower in that room, just a bath. Otherwise all very good. Nice bar and restaurant. We enjoyed having a drink by the fire and had two gorgeous meals there over both nights. Would definitely revisit. Would like to have seen a competitive dinner bed and breakfast rate though, as a 2 night stay with dinner and drinks on both nights was £370, which was a tad expensive for the length of time spent.

We had a very enjoyable two night stay at The Black Swan and would highly recommend it to anyone. The staff were all extremely pleasant and helpful throughout and the food was delicious. There was a good choice for breakfast and was cooked fresh, we also had dinner on the second night and wished we had arrived earlier on the first as we could have ate there then as well. We will definitely return for another stay in the future. Many Thanks to you all. From Paul, Louise and Jack

I booked the Black Swan as a birthday surprise for my husband & also to visit Keswick & surrounding area. The Black Swan is the perfect getaway for peace & quiet with fabulous food and immaculate accomodation. Staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The Black Swan has a four star rating but in my opinion it should be 5 stars.I would highly recommend the Black Swan.

This is the third year that we've visited The Black Swan and it's consistently wonderful. The staff are friendly and helpful. The accommodation is clean and tidy. The food is tasty and filling and the overall atmosphere is like a home from home - particularly sitting in the bar in front of a roaring fire! We last visited The Black Swan about ten years ago and now find it to have been completely refurbished. The old charm of a country pub has gone but the refurd' is first class. The high standard is maintained by the staff and the service offered, with a good menue of well cooked and presented food in a pleasant and comfortable restaurant.A well stocked bar with cask ales and a first class staff to look after you.

This was our third visit to the Black Swan, and it didn't disappoint- great location, helpful and friendly staff, beautifully clean and comfortable rooms, delicious food.Well worth a visit if you're in this neck of the woods.Would also like to recommend the Mill Yard Cafe in nearby Morland as a place to eat through the day -OMG, the cream scones and cafes!! Definitely worth the ten minute drive - this was recommended to us by a member of staff from the Swan. We'll be back to both the Swan and the cafe!
